Mary Hill
We were sorry to hear of the death of
Mary Hill on Thursday 11 March 2010 at the age of 88 (she would have been
89 in August). A staunch member of the society and former chair, Mary
appeared, often in major parts, in many of our shows from 1968-1987. She had a
strong, warm and friendly personality. Her subsequent move from Winkworth Road,
Banstead, to Tyne and Wear with her husband Jack was a matter of regret to
her many friends in Banstead - although we were pleased to see her on her all
too infrequent visits. In the last decade she was sadly incapacitated by
illness.
Mary was Inez twice in
the Gondoliers; she was Ruth in the Mikado, Lady Angela in Patience, Prince
Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus, and Katisha in the Mikado. When John and I first
joined the society she was a notable Calliope in Orpheus. She subsequently
played Mary Willow in Bless the Bride, Mirabella in Gypsy Baron, Ernestine
in Perchance to Dream, Dame Hannah in Ruddigore, Fruma-Sarah in Fiddler, Kathi
in White Horse Inn, and Lady Psyche in Princees Ida. She also performed in
revues and variety shows and in the chorus.
Carole Daniels has conveyed our thoughts go to her family, on behalf of the society, in a card she sent to her
daughter Rowena, who lives in Tadworth.
Mary`s funeral was on Wednesday 31
March at 2.30pm at Lincoln Crematorium. No flowers were asked for but donations have
been made, and can still be made, in her memory to “Alzeihmers Society” at Co-op Funeral Service, 12
Portland St, Lincoln LN5 7JX with cheques to be marked “Mary Hill”.
